LEAK LOCATORS a division of PLATS Limited have been in the business of locating pipes, cables and drains on Petrol Filling Stations for nearly 20 years and locating water leaks for the last 10 years.
Using equipment designed and developed by a Swedish Company specifically to locate leaks in Jet Engine fuel lines, other applications to the developer soon became apparent and modifications were carried out to trace leaks on underground pipe systems.

| Today, with leaks being a major concern to commercial and domestic users, LEAK LOCATORS are now using the following method of solving the problem of locating fluid leaks even if the accurate position of the pipe, regardless of the material, is unknown. By injecting a mixture of two gases, the carrier being Nitrogen, the tracer being only 5% hydrogen and using equipment so sensitive as to detect 0.0001% of it in the air, where the leak occurs, the concentration of the injected gas can be detected, even through concrete cover. The implication to the Petroleum Retail Trade of such a service means that when they are advised that a pipeline fails on their forecourt, they now have an excellent chance of finding the leak for repair with less excavation. To inject the gas, LEAK LOCATORS only require the retailers pipe/pump service company whilst they are both on site, to drain the faulty pipe, plug the pipe at one end and fit an adapter at the other to add the gas. Where the gas is detected, is the leak, with no holes drilled during the test, the pipework company then repair it. LEAK LOCATORS having, on average, completed their task within one site day. The safety factor is greatly improved and our location teams work to the Institute of Petroleum Code of Safe Practice for Contractors Working on Petrol Filling Stations.
The technique of using the safe gas mixture also means that even where leaks are indicated by the water meter, and the pipe position is clearly unknown, the gas will permeate soil, road surfaces or concrete after a reasonable period of time, depending on the depth of the pipe. This system is also approved by the Drinking Water Inspectorate for use in domestic water supply pipe lines.
The unusual sniffing technique has been successfully used in both domestic and commercial water supplies, domestic heating systems, compressed air lines, petrol products lines, pipes where welding failure is suspected and is applicable to many other applications.
